Noise mapping of the entire TOTAL Feyzin site

In complex industrial environments, noise pollution can affect both the health of employees and the quality of life of local residents. This is why environmental monitoring systems (noise, vibration, air quality) are essential today. To this end, Total’s Feyzin site, an ICPE-classified refinery located in the Lyon region, called on SIM Engineering, a specialist acoustic engineering firm, to carry out a complete noise mapping of its perimeter.

This project illustrates a rigorousacoustic engineering approach applied to a strategic site in the Industry & Oil & Gas sector, in compliance with ICPE regulations.

Regulatory context and acoustic issues

Total’s Feyzin site is subject to strict environmental noise abatement regulations. As aclassified facility for environmental protection (ICPE), it must guarantee a high level of industrial acoustic safety.

As part of its sustainable development policy, Total has taken a proactive approach to acoustics and vibration consulting, in order to anticipate legislative changes and meet society’s expectations in terms of environmental transparency.

SIM Engineering’s methodology

To carry out this study, SIM Engineering mobilized all its expertise in acoustic measurement & diagnostics and acoustic predictive modeling. The methodology deployed included the following stages:

  • Site-wide inventory of noise sources: production units, piping networks, compressors, logistics areas, noisy industrial machines.
  • In-situ measurement campaigns: data collection in real operation, according to standardized protocols.
  • 3D acoustic simulation and noise maps to visualize the spatial distribution of nuisances.
  • In-depth analysis of critical areas using acoustic imaging & monitoring.

This approach enables us to carry out an integrated vibration and acoustic study, in line with the requirements of ISO 9001 acoustic certification in the industrial context.

Industrial noise mapping objectives

Acoustic mapping of the Feyzin site is a strategic environmental management tool. It enables :

  • Prioritize corrective actions: soundproofing, acoustic screens, equipment modernization, API 618 flexibility study.
  • Dialogue with stakeholders: local authorities, employees, operators.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance in the short and long term.

It is part of a continuous improvement approach to reducing environmental noise at ICPE industrial sites.

An exemplary environmental approach

SIM Engineering ‘s project is part of a global vision ofindustrial process acoustics. The company regularly carries out this type of mission for key accounts in thenuclear, petrochemical, water treatment and pharmaceutical industries.

This know-how is based on key competencies:

  • Vibration and pulsation analysis to avoid mechanical fatigue of equipment.
  • Seismic survey of sensitive equipment.
  • Autonomous acoustic and vibration monitoring with connected sensors.
  • Regulatory noise and vibration studies for new-build and renovation projects.

The Boët Group is also part of this dynamic, supporting manufacturers in similar acoustic dimensioning and nuisance treatment issues.

Conclusion and call to action

Noise mapping at Total’s Feyzin site is a concrete example of optimized environmental management in the petrochemical sector. Thanks to SIM Engineering‘s expertise, noise impacts are kept under control, stakeholders are kept informed and regulatory compliance is ensured.
